Membership of the Essex Agricultural Society

A message from Rosemary Padfield (Chairman)

Let me first introduce you to the society, the EAS has been serving Essex Agriculture for 150 years, it has a membership of some 650 farming and associated members.

It all started when the Royal Agricultural Society were invited down in 1856 to hold the Royal Exhibition
(a seven day affair) in Chelmsford.  With surplus funds, they thought it was a good to hold an annual Essex Show which commenced in 1858, the birth of the Society.

This carried on until 2000, when Foot and Mouth prevented the 2001 Show, but it also coincided with a general feeling that the show had outlived its purpose with the smaller shows such as Tendring, YFC, Orsett and Barlylands providing a good Agricultural display for the people of Essex.

Since then the Society has found a new footing that is deemed very important in today’s environment: -

“The Essex Schools Day” held at Writtle College, enables 300 farmers and Writtle staff to show 3,000 children between the age of 7 and 11, the facts about Food and Farming!  It was started in 2008, the “Year of Food and Farming”, and is carrying on due to the unprecedented demand from the schools within the county.  We currently have a waiting list of thousands as there are over 100,000 children in this age group within Essex.

The Society also recognises “Long Service Awards” for those who have served more than 25 years in the industry.  This is held at the President's Garden Party in the summer, which is a very enjoyable occasion.

The Society actively supports both the Ploughing Match and the Farms Competition, which continue the fine camaraderie within the industry.

The Society also holds two or three lectures each year where high profile speakers are invited to address members on their relevant subjects.  Some of the speakers who have given a talk are:-
Adam Henson of BBC's 'Countryfile', Christine Hamilton and Paul Heiney of
ITV's 'Countrywise'.

Please feel free to discuss details with any member of the council or return to the  Membership page to view some of the benifits of individual or corporate membership and to download a membership form.
